MY REVIEW
4 stars of steaming hotness
Holden and Leighton married under unusual circumstances and both are wary of revealing their true feelings, hopes and fears for their marriage. The chemistry between them was so hot my kindle was in danger of melting and I loved the will they/won't struggle around moving their relationship on.
I enjoyed the sexual tension and understood how their baggage made it difficult for either Holden or Leighton to make the first move. There was a lot of sexual based thoughts and whilst this certainly raised the heat level of the book, at times it did lack emotional depth. Leighton carried some deep emotional scars from her childhood and whilst Holden did reassure her and build her up, I would have liked an emotional and honest discussion about this. The conversations they did have were a little too brief and lacked the depth I was hoping for. However this was a very minor and certainly didn't spoil the book and is very much a personal preference.
There is a lot of action and some parts of this story were clearly setting up future stories. In some ways the teenage party, whilst full of tragedy, felt a little rushed. OK it helped conclude the story but for me it needed to have had more follow up in the community and in their thoughts. Whilst too much navel gazing irritates me in a book, this sometimes just lacked that little bit of contemplation by the main characters. This is why I gave 4 rather than 5 stars.
Over all the story is good, it is very well written - no trying to guess who is speaking or series editing flaws - and wasn't predictable or cliched. The pace was good, the story felt believable and I felt a connection to the characters. I want more of Leighton and Holden but also can't wait for Ace, Violet and Mason to get their stories too.
Havoc
(Moonshine Task Force #3)
by Laramie Briscoe
A Contemporary Romance
Release Date: August 18, 2017
Blurb
When a marriage of convenience turns into the passion of a
lifetime…
Holden “Havoc” Thompson
My job as the leader of the Moonshine Task Force is my life. I eat, breathe, and sleep it. The men under my command mean the world to me. Knowing they count on my guidance has kept my demons at bay for longer than I care to admit.
The control I have over myself is an iron fist that sometimes threatens to squeeze the life out of me. What I want more than anything is to live again – let go of the hurt smothering every bit of light I have in this darkness.
I don’t expect it to come in the form of a Moonshiner’s daughter needing my protection.
Leighton Strather
My whole life has been defined by who my family is. In the state of Alabama, we’re number one with a target on our backs. The danger and prestige isn’t for me. I don’t care about the money, and I care too much about the families we’ve ruined.
My brother and my dad are proud of it. They wear their arrest records like a badge of honor. Me? I want as far away from the lifestyle as I can get.
It’s the only reason I ask Holden to marry me. At least that's what I tell myself.
I never expect his whispered yes to cause such upheaval in my life. Even though I resist, I learn some havoc is good – and this one? It’s a whirlwind of lust, hope, and love and all I can do is let it sweep me away.
