My Review - 3.5 out of 5 stars
I was so very much looking forward to reading Derek's story - I was expecting some huge heartache from his past and a big battle to find love. Not only did I not get that (which I can accept because I was never promised it!) but I didn't even get a 'full' story. This book was about half the length of the previous 3 and felt more like a book outline than a fully fleshed novel. In fact it took less than 2 hours to read, which would firmly place it in the novella category for me.
Laura and Derek met, then parted. A few weeks later they met again and then suddenly they are spending Christmas day with his family. We get retrospectively told about some events that, had we experienced them, would have added so much depth to the story. Where was all the sexual tension and build up from that was so well done in the previous three books? And why, after the prologue, was Chance consistently referred to as the youngest brother? I believe that would be Jake.
The 'basic' plot idea was really good, and I thoroughly enjoyed what I read. I really liked both Laura and Derek, and the chemistry between them was both scorching hot and believable. Sadly the brevity of the book made it difficult to totally buy into their relationship and their declarations of love. There was also the potential for scenes involving Brandon, but instead he felt like a footnote with no exploration of his and Derek's relationship.
The writing is really good, with an easy to read, nicely flowing style that is easy to follow. The banter and teasing between the brothers was so warm and loving. The pace was good and kept my attention. Whilst, at times, this felt more like a book outline than a full story, it was still a warm, steamy and enjoyable read.
About Amanda Adams
Amanda Adams fell in love with books at a very early age. Her earliest memories are of sitting on her mother's lap reading Cinderella and Snow White and Rose Red over, and over, and over again until she had them memorized –- she was too young to know the alphabet.
Amanda started writing stories in big, sloppy handwriting in a wide-rule notebook when she was bored, during class (of course) in the fifth grade. Her favorite stories always include excitement, adventure and a handsome hero guaranteed to sweep her off her feet.
Amanda lives in beautiful Colorado with her husband (her high-school sweetheart who proved the reality of "love at first sight") and three teenagers whom she reminds, repeatedly… "If it's not in my phone, it's not happening," because her mind is oh-so-often far away living a fairy tale. (That's code for – if an alarm doesn't go off, she forgets to pick up her kids from school…)
