Review - 4.5 stars

Fast paced, action packed and full of unexpected surprised

This is the second book in the Rouen Chronicles series and does need to be read after Book #1. This story picks up fairly close to the end of that book, with Briar in captivity and Dominic looking to destroy her. The book then twists and turns through quite a few startling events, one of which gutted me and let to Briar making some foolish choices.

Her bond with Luke continues to grow, though they still haven't got down and dirty! However a vampire by the name of Angel (*swoon*) adds an unexpected element to the plot. There is still a character I'm not totally sure I trust (view spoiler at bottom of this post). We find out more about the threat that is growing for both paranormals and humans, but there is still a long way left before this threat is neutralised.

My attention was held from the very first to the very last line. The writing flows so smoothly, the characters are well crafted and multifaceted. Within the pages we find intrigue, lies and secrets along with some long hidden truths being revealed. A Shifter's Rage is a wonderful follow up to A Shifter's Curse and I am massively looking forward to reading Book 3.

Synopsis

"I never go to bed angry. I stay awake and plot my revenge."

Imprisoned for killing Silas, Briar's only chance of surviving is to rely on her roommates and Luke, the sexy shifter she loves to hate. But getting free won't solve her problems. She still has to kill Dominic, the pack Alpha who murdered her entire family.

To do that, she has to make Dominic believe she's still team bad guys so she can get close to him and find out whom he's working with. Especially when she learns just about everyone and their evil dog is looking for the one thing she has sworn to protect--the Abydos, powerful and ancient blood that could either end the world or save it.

But playing the other side has some severe consequences, especially when she gets too close to the darkness and savors it's poisonous flavor one too many times. If Briar can't let go of her demons, she'll lose everyone she loves.

** Intended for adult readers due to violence and language. **

BOOK REVIEW - PARANORMAL ROMANCE

A Shifter's Curse:
A Gritty Urban Fantasy Novel

(Rouen Chronicles Book 1)

by Raven Steele and Ava Mason

My Review

4.5 stars for this action packed, exciting, well written and entertaining first instalment.

Whilst this is set in the same 'world' as the Aris Crow series it can very much be read independent of that series. Perhaps it's because this is written from a female perspective but I found I 'got into' this book really easily. I loved Briar, she isn't perfect and she even makes some really foolish choices but this actually made it easier to relate to. There was an edge of darkness in how she ended up having to do bad things for good reasons, it really added depth and angst to the story.

The plot has some fabulous twists and a few unexpected surprises, easily holding my attention from start to finish. The pace and fabulous writing made it so easy to read, I was never tempted to skim parts or put the book down for a while.

Whilst the story is first person from just Briar's point of view I still felt I got to know other characters really well in the book. In fact there is a good blend of different characters, and you don't always know who to trust and who to hate! There is a thread of romance in this too, though it consists of smouldering glances, loaded exchanges and a chemistry hot enough to melt ice.

There is great world building, with information being released swiftly enough to keep you in the picture but without being an information overload. This book totally drew me in and even without the soft cliffie of an ending I would still be intent on reading the next book in the series.

Synopsis

"Karma takes too long. I'd rather beat the shit out of you right now."

With a dagger in her boot and blades in her bra, Briar, a powerful shifter, arrives in Rouen with one goal: find and kill Dominic, the man responsible for the destruction of her entire family and wolf pack. When she discovers he is an Alpha surrounded by muscle-ripped shifters and equally as strong witches, she knows the only way she will get close enough to kill him is if she joins his dangerous and shady pack.

But infiltrating them proves more challenging than she expects, especially when her new roommates turn out to be supernaturals with their own powers and secrets. She can't tell if the centuries-old, nosey vampire and fashion-sensitive witch are working with her or against her.

Whether they are friends or enemies doesn't change things. Briar has a job to do. And she is willing to do whatever it takes to quench her thirst for revenge, even if it means destroying her own soul.

In this full-length, urban fantasy series, Steele and Mason introduce readers to a dark and exciting world full of shifters, vampires, and witches. If you like Charlaine Harris, Patricia Briggs, Shayne Silvers or K.F. Breene, you will LOVE this new series! Scroll up and grab this gritty urban fantasy TODAY!
