I have had Destruction sitting on my kindle, waiting to be read for quite some time. Life, arc reading and buying too many books has meant that I just hadn't gotten around to reading it. However I do know the author is working on completing the second book, so I decided it was time I got myself caught up.

The title is very fitting in so many ways, including the devastation to my soul. This is a pretty dark read, with non-con (albeit it's enjoyed, but she definitely says no), sadism, violence and what is possibly a healthy dollop of Stockholm Syndrome.

David is an antihero of the first order, doing bad things for misguided reasons. He and Lianne share some very warped but extremely hot chemistry. There are passages that make for uncomfortable reading - because you really shouldn't be turned on by such depravity but you are. Lianne is very easy to like and connect to, their is a very natural and likeable feel to her character. I disliked David for so much of the book, but that's because he is written to BE hated, until you don't.

The writing held my attention, the characters interested me, whilst the plot and suspense was well paced so as to hold my attention. I was huddled in the corner of that dank, concrete cell. I was chained across that thin, worn mattress. The skill of the author put me into the middle of the story, had me screaming in the dark and crying in misery alongside Lianne.

Fae (Daughters of Eltera Book 1) by Jennifer Bene

MY REVIEW - 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Wow, what an unexpected surprise it was to read this book. It took me back to my late teens and early twenties when I devoured every Anne McCaffrey, Mercedes Lackey, Julian May and David Eddings book I could get my hands on, though it had a much more modern feel to it.

This book combined everything I want in a good read. It had characters who engaged me and that I subsequently cared about. It was well written, entertaining and with a pace that held my attention without loosing me. Best of all it had magic, immortal beings, gods and goddesses too.

Fae was a warrior through and through, but one who always stood up for the underdog. Enslaved and immortal she has become almost immune to her own suffering, but can not stand the hurt dealt out to others. She is a feisty, strong and caring female and is the sort of heroine I love to read about.

I was pleasantly surprised by Kiernan. He wasn't the dark, broody alpha male I expected. Instead he was gentle and reserved, a man who had lost so much and been held in thrall against his will. A man willing to give everything for the woman he loves.

The world building, scene setting and character development is excellent, I felt like I was there, seeing what they saw, feeling what they felt. The book paddled at the edges of darkness, with some very terrible experiences being implied rather than experienced.

Given that Kiernan and Fae were together virtually 24/7 the pace of their relationship, and the growing bond between them, felt as though it developed at a natural rate and was believable. Whilst we got some intimate scenes, they felt organic to the plot and were neither too frequent nor too gratuitous.

The moment I finished this book I wanted to dive straight into book 2. It was that captivating and thrilling a read. My only disappointment is that there are only the 2 books so far. I might have to stalk the author and pester her for more books in this series.

Wow, finally a book labelled as dark that truly is dark. This is the somewhat violent, often twisted and definitely dubious and steamy story of Nicky and Andre. And what a well written, attention holding, mind-blowing story it is. There are parts of this I'm not sure that I should enjoy, and other parts that I read whilst hiding behind a cushion ..... reactions that only a really good dark read will elicit.

Nicky is a strong female, whose naive innocence leads her into a nightmare situation, one where death would be a blessing. However she is a light that calls to Andre's black soul, the monster wants to save her from others, but will she survive him?

Andre wasn't quite as black as he painted himself. His soul had a teeny, tiny chink of light in it - or perhaps it wasn't quite as pitch dark as the rest of it. He'd once been good but too long in a dark and violent underworld had stripped his humanity. However Nicky could see, and brought out, the good in him. But don't be fooled - this is Jennifer Bene with one of her dark reads and the heroine will have to survive some horrendous ordeals. Andre's not a hero, but I can guarantee that by the end of the book you will love him. This just goes to show how talented the author is at crafting deranged and dangerous anti-heroes that we just can't resist.

You know you'll be rooting for Andre to become Nicky's knight in shining armour. However that isn't what he wants to be, or can be and there will be parts of this book that are both unexpected and difficult to read. They are also what makes this such a gripping story. The writing is excellent, I flew through the story, totally mesmerised by it and unable to put it down until it was finished.

It's not a book for the feint of heart but if you like dark you'll love this.

“Whatever it is you want, I can help you get it. You don’t have to do this.”

“You can’t,” he answered, and he knew it was true. The lack of action from the asshole when she’d begged on the phone had made it clear. As long as he stopped, Mercier would continue to drag this out — which left only one option, he’d have to hurt the girl, torture her until he gave in for real. No more promises, no more time, no more deadlines.

“I can. Ju-just give me the chance.” Her hands tightened into fists as he moved closer, tugging at the chains that he already knew wouldn’t give her any slack.

“No more chances for you or Daddy. Either he signs, or we keep going until you’re done.”

“Open up.” He held the gag in front of her face, offering her the easy way, but she clenched her teeth tight just like he’d expected. Somehow the girl was simultaneously terrified of him, and still defiant. Where was her sense of self-preservation? Why wasn’t she submitting to him fully in an attempt to make him lenient?

Not like it would work.

Wrapping his hand under her chin, he dug his fingers into the muscles of her jaw, slowly forcing her mouth wide as she whimpered. As soon as there was enough space, he forced the ball gag between her teeth, and then pressed his hand down to keep it there. “Tsk, tsk. I wasn’t asking, princess, and when you disobey you just make me angry.”

A sharp, incomprehensible shout escaped her lips, so he locked the gag a notch too tight, leaving her groaning as her jaw strained.
