✰♡*•˛ BOOK REVIEW ✰♡*•˛ THE ATHLETE by Elin Peer

The Athlete

(Men of the North #8)

by Elin Peer

4.5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐✪

When opposites meet and find that they aren't as different as they first thought

Whilst the Men of the North Books can all be read stand alone, I do think that having read at least the first few books of the series would really improve your enjoyment of this book. The Athlete is Hunter's story, he was one of the young male Nmen who attended the first cross-border school. The series, if you don't know it, is set in a dystopian future and much of the background to the world is contained in the first couple of books of the series.

I have read and loved every book I have read by this author, her characters have depth and personality and their emotions become your emotions. Hunter and Emanuela's story didn't disappoint, and there were plenty of little twists to the tale to make it feel fresh and original.

I loved how atypical a Motlander Emanuela was, it was also quite funny that she didn't appreciate the boot being on the other foot! She was so very much more used to being the one causing, rather than taking, offence. I didn't feel quite as much of a connection to Ema as I did to Hunter, but this was because of the paradoxical nature of who was more in touch with their feelings and emotions. It really brought a different feel to both the book AND the series, I love how it's constantly evolving and doesn't get stale or same old, same old.

Hunter quite simply made me melt. Who knew he had such a soft heart and caring nature under all that rugged manly Nman-ness? He totally made this book for me, he was swoony, sexy, alpha, caring and sweet all wrapped up in one gorgeous package. Oh the subtle changes that attending the mixed school has had.

Jonah, Ema's brother, really brought something special to the story too. I loved his scenes with Mila, so cute and funny. Best of all was his 'chat' with Hunter and Solo at the wedding. Wise words and advice we could all follow!

There were some wonderful glimpses of 'friends' from previous books and hints at future pairings. I am so looking forward to how THOSE stories play out. I really don't know how she does it, but this is yet another amazing book by Elin Peer.

Synopsis

How do you win a soccer game when you’re not just playing against the other team, but your captain too?

When Hunter Hercules, the biggest soccer star in the Northlands, is transferred to play in the Motherlands, he’s mad as hell. Not only is their style of soccer different, but they have mixed teams and his female captain, Emanuela, calls him unsophisticated and claims that she’s a better player than him. What a fucking joke!

The whole thing is ridiculous and infuriating to Hunter. That’s why when the soccer club sends all the players on a team-building trip, Hunter shows up determined to put the little woman in her place. It should have been easy, but Emanuela isn’t a normal sweet Motlander he can push around. She’s competitive to the bone, and when Hunter plays dirty she’s fast to adapt and hit him back tenfold.

Someone should have warned her not to mess with an Nman.

The Athlete is book #8 in Elin Peer’s highly praised series Men of the North. Readers call these books “unputdownable” because of the sharp dialogue, fast pace, and depths of the characters.

If you like strong women, alpha males, and a roller-coaster ride of emotions, then this romantic sci-fi is a safe pick for you.

BOOK REVIEW ~~~~~ THE DANCER (Men of the North #7) by Elin Peer

It might seem that I only ever read good books - I don't.  However my decision for this blog is to only include books that were better than average, books that were more than simply 'OK'.

The Dancer is one such book.  It is part of a series of books, all of which can be read stand alone though their stories interlink in such a way that you definitely benefit from starting with book #1, The Protector.

Men of the North is set 400 years in the future, men are few and women rule the world.  Except for the area formerly known as Canada and Alaska, which is inhabited by the Men of the Northlands, a group of strong men, who refuse to be ruled by women.

My Review - 4.75 stars

A wonderful second-chance romance

We first met Solomon and Willow as childhood sweethearts in The Mentor  and subsequent books. Having discovered, in The Geniusthat things had somehow gone badly wrong for them, I was very eager to know their truths. This book didn't disappoint me at all, and yet again reflects the writing talent that is Elin Peer.

Though I really couldn't understand her animosity at first, I still really liked Willow. She was vile to Solo, yet she was such a gentle, caring person the rest of the time that I knew there was more to the story than we were seeing. Even if she irritates you it is worth continuing with this as the reasons for her attitude to Solo become clearer further into the story. And you would miss one heck of a powerful and wonderful tale.

Solomon is a fierce warrior, not only a Huntsman but one of the feared DoomSquad. In fact we first meet him whilst he is carrying out his soldiering duties. Duties that, despite protecting women from domestic violence, haunt him. In previous books he came across as quite arrogant and even a tad overbearing, but in this book we see quite a different side to him. Ms Peer managed to give us a hero who felt things deeply and acknowledged his own emotions without losing any of his strength or dominance.

There was just such emotional angst and a huge depth of feeling from the outset. My heart ached almost from the first page and there were times when both main characters brought tears to my eyes. Normally in a second-chance I'm wanting the hero to grovel and beg forgiveness before he wins back the heroine, but the story line of this book was so unique that I was just hoping and praying for Willow to realise how much Solo loved her and was perfect for her.

Whilst this can be read as a stand alone, I think reading the two books mentioned will help provide very important background information. Whilst Solo and Willow are only side characters in both books we do see how close they are in The Mentor.

Synopsis
Sometimes the purest love can turn to the deepest hate.

I was twelve when I promised Solo that I would one day marry him. Maybe I would have if he hadn’t gotten impatient and ruined everything that summer when I was fifteen. For the last seven years I’ve replaced the love I once felt for him with anger over his almost getting me killed.

Willow, a talented Motlander dancer, goes on tour in the Northlands. What should have been a chance for a new beginning brings her face to face with her traumatic past when Solo, a mountain of a man and the fiercest warrior of his generation, is put in charge of her safety against her will. If she can’t get rid of him at least she can return the favor and make his job a nightmare too.

The Dancer is the 7th book in Elin Peer’s wildly successful Men of the North series that has readers gushing over the Nmen, unusual plotlines, and the strong set of characters.

If you like large alpha men, strong women, humor, and a lot of depth, then this romantic sci-fi is for you.

My Review

The Protector (Men of the North Book 1)The Protector by Elin Peer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Let's just say that I loved this book so much I couldn't wait for some guests to leave our house so that I could get back to the story. It really was a book I just didn't want to put down.

Christina is an adventurous soul and rashly decides to head out to the Northlands where men are men and women are rare and prized possessions. There she is placed under the protection of Boulder, a sexy beast of a man who challenges all her thoughts about sex, relationships and what makes a man. They both have very stereotypical views of the others culture and society, and both have to adapt their ways in order to keep Christina safe.

The story has some thought provoking parts, some humorous scenes (particularly between Khan and Pearl) and plenty of steamy, hot chemistry. The book is extremely well written with a story that is engaging and draws you in so that you live and feel along with the characters. The plot moves along at a good pace, the characters are both interesting and likeable and the style of writing is smooth, flowing and very easy to read.

I can't wait to see where Ms Peer takes these books and will now be waiting with baited breath for book 2.

About The Author:

Elin is described as the kind of person you end up telling your darkest and deepest secrets to, even though you never intended to. Maybe that's where she gets her inspiration for her books. One thing is for sure: Elin is not afraid to provoke, shock, touch, and excite you when she writes about unwanted desire, forbidden passion, and all those damn emotions in between.

Elin is around forty and curious by nature. She likes to explore and can tell you about riding elephants through the Asian jungle, watching the sunset in the Sahara Desert from the back of a camel, sailing down the Nile in Egypt, kayaking in Alaska, and flying over Greenland in helicopters.

She can also testify that the most interesting people aren't always kings, queens, presidents, and celebrities, because she has met many of them in person.

After traveling the world and living in different countries, Elin is currently residing outside Seattle in the US with her husband, daughters, and her black Labrador, Lucky, which follows her everywhere.

GREEN (CLASHING COLORS) by ELIN PEER

Oh my, I have discovered a new favourite author.  The only negative/disappointing thing about this book is that I can only give it 5 stars ...... I would happily give it 500.

This book took me on an emotional roller coaster and had me begging for a HEA for Melody and Christian.  The author writes emotions so amazingly well, and so accurately, that my heart felt like it was breaking a few times.  I loved both the Hero and Heroine, they are real, imperfect and captivating characters.

The book is written 1st person from both POV's, allowing you to understand their decisions, emotions and mistakes.  I liked how we learnt about their dysfunctional families, but this wasn't harped on about as the excuse for everything they did.  There were subtle examples of how it affected their behaviour but it wasn't overdone.

The writing is incredible, the plot fairly simple but a perfect complement to the complex emotions and all the characters are interesting and well developed.  The book was not only easy to read but kept me gripped from beginning to end.  There is no huge mystery, no threat or subterfuge, just an amazing and captivating (but never simple) romance.

I'm off now to read the first two books in the series, and any other books by this author as I am feeling withdrawal symptoms already.

How dare he? How dare he come into my store, The Green Vegan Shop, with a t-shirt saying: I didn’t claw myself to the top of the food chain to eat vegetables? I get it. He’s a Chef and meat lover, but does he have to flash it in my face every time he shops here? Honestly, I try to be nice to everyone. I’m a vegan after all. We’re nice people… but this guy gets under my skin. Like a tick. And brings out the feisty redhead lurking inside me. He is easily the most infuriating, selfish, and cruel bastard in the city of Seattle.Melody is proving to herself and the world that she has what it takes to run a successful business, based on sustainability and fair trade. Her family thinks she should be focusing on starting a family since she’s already thirty-two, and she is trying. But even with the help of an agency it seems impossible to find a decent man who matches her criteria and has what it takes to excite her. It’s not that’s she’s frigid, it’s just that she’s attracted to the wrong man.

This book is intended for mature readers only, as it contains a few graphic scenes and some inappropriate language.
