My Review 4 stars

A very satisfying conclusion to this trilogy of books

This is a hard book to classify into a particular genre, it's a mix of contemporary romance but with paranormal/mystical elements. This isn't a standalone, you need to read Mr Rook and Pawn first.

Both Mr Rook and Pawn were full of suspense and we left Pawn on a real take-your-breathe cliffie. This book picks up right where Pawn finished, with Stephanie in mortal danger and James Rook ageing rapidly. What follows is a very fast paced adventure with lots of revelations, quite a few unexpected twists and turns and still some mystery, which was fine as we didn't need an answer to everything that happened. I would have maybe liked a few 'slower' passages to counterbalance the sheer pace of the rest of the book, though this wasn't an issue and certainly didn't lower my enjoyment of the book.

Whilst I was very happy with where the story went, I really suffered from the time between book releases. It's been a while (8 or 9 months) since I read Pawn , so for the first couple of chapters I was playing 'catch-up' and my head wasn't in quite the right frame of mind to fully enjoy this. With hindsight I needed to do a re-read but I simply didn't have the time. If you're coming to the series new then you won't have this issue but I would recommend reading them close together in order to continue the air of suspense and mystery.

This is a really well written series, exciting, captivating, steaming hot and pretty spellbinding and I really do recommend trying it. Whilst there is a 'magical' element about Rook's Island, this is a book that could also be enjoyed by those who do not normally read in the paranormal genre.
