My Review - 5 stars
I really wasn't 'in the mood' for a mafia romance book when I started reading this, but I had accepted an arc copy and obviously felt obliged to give it a go. Once I'd started reading I was immediately caught up by the story and, since it was a Sunday, read it all in one go. It says something about the quality of an author's writing and story-telling ability that they turn my mind a full one-eighty on a book.
I've only read the previous book in the Chicago Syndicate series and both books do genuinely read as stand-alones. I'm sure they would be even better if you've read the other books, as you would 'know' the supporting characters, but the book is written in a way that allows you to pick up enough back story, without spoiling those books. (I've bought the others but just not got around to reading them yet - I'm now asking myself why?!)
Carmine is a bit of an ass, in fact more than a bit of an ass at times but Eva does an excellent job of knocking him down to size. That said he is super sexy, charming and loyal to those he cares about. Eva felt much older than her 20 years, but then she has been dealt such a rough hand by life that it's no wonder she has had to grow up. Her self-loathing, due to her 'job', was heartbreaking even as it was beautifully portrayed, as was her state of mind when she ended up in Carmines apartment. Those scenes will tear you apart.
The love-hate relationship between Carmine and Eva cause sparks to fly, and showed just how amazingly strong, and strong-willed, both of them were. The chemistry between them is super hot and I loved seeing the same scene from both their POV's as very often they had such different perceptions of it.
This is an exciting, emotional and full of intrigue read. I thoroughly recommend it.
