Ace is saving lives and mending hearts.......

Anthony “Ace” Bailey

I’m not a rules kinda guy

Department Policy? Kinda sucks, but I do what I have to for the job that I love.
Playing it safe? Not my thing.
Married? No big deal when I know she’s unhappy and scared.

I’m one of those guys – a sniper in the military, a little bit of an adrenaline junkie, and a member of the Moonshine Task Force. I’ve lived through some shit.

My gut has never failed me. It’s my sixth-sense. Warning me of a gunshot coming my way, of a traffic stop being potentially deadly, or the tingling in the back of my neck when I go to sleep telling me I’ll be woken up by a call in the middle of the night. My gut has always kept me honest.

Like the day I walked into The Café and saw the new waitress. There was a ring on her left hand, but I didn’t care. One look in her eyes told me everything I needed to know. Her marriage wasn’t one made of love and respect. It was one made of fear and doubt.

It’s why I ignored that ring, why I arrested her husband, and the reason I’m willing to take my time. Patience is a virtue, and with this woman, I have it in spades.

Violet Miller

Meeting Anthony Bailey changed my life. He did things that no one else has ever done for me.

Feeling safe? Never happened before.
Feeling wanted? It’s been years.
Being independent? I’m learning.

It’s foreign, not having someone question my every move, being able to eat what I want for dinner, and sitting out on my front porch talking to Anthony every night while we share a couple beers.

I try to tell myself he’s just being nice; that he’s doing his job and working within the community. The problem? The night he takes the kiss we both want, everything changes, and I can no longer deny what I feel. But it doesn’t stop me from trying – and I learn quickly that Ace knows me better than anyone else ever has – including myself.

All I can do is hang on, as he takes me on the scariest journey of my life. The one that bends us until we almost break, and ends with a happily ever after I never thought I would get.

ACE includes the wedding of a beloved couple, an appearance by Reaper, and the continuation of EVERYONE falling in love with Caleb!

My Review - Almost 4 stars

This is my second attempt at writing a review for this. I'm really torn because this is an author I admire and whose work I have always enjoyed. Indeed I 'liked' this book, there are no issues with the quality of writing, the characters within or the plot idea.

*sigh* Perhaps it's me, it could well be a mix of where my mind is, what else I've read recently and what genres I'm currently enjoying. However, much as I don't want to insult or upset the author, for me this book lacked depth and was a little bland. I could summarise the entire book in half a dozen sentences (or less).

The book starts with Violet in hospital recovering from a vicious assault, after years of suffering domestic violence. What I wanted, no needed, was to see her emotional journey of recovery, see her learning to forgive herself, let go of the past and learn to trust again. I expected to see her awaken from terrible nightmares, cower at raised voices, have a flashback triggered by some noise/smell/sound. I needed to feel her suffering but all I got was one scene where she flinched away from Ace and then an almost immediate acceptance of and trust in him.

Not only did this not feel 'real' to me but it resulted in the next 50-60% of the book being fluff and filler. Very pleasant, entertaining and well written fluff and filler, fluff and filler that I enjoyed, but fluff and filler no less. Yes it gave us lots of encounters and conversations between Violet and Ace, but it didn't give us depth or emotion. TBH there was much that could have been cut out, without altering your understanding of the characters or the story.

Ace is a bit of an enigma - we've heard him mentioned briefly in other books but not really met him. Whilst I did get to know him very much in the 'here and now' - a man ready for commitment, prepared to wait it out for Violet and a bit of a thrill seeker - it felt a superficial knowing. We didn't see many work interactions with the other MTF men either and his application to join some team or other was very much a thrown in comment that then just disappeared from the story.

I read this book easily, the prose flows smoothly, the characters are likeable and believable as is their romance. There is a lot of building of events/story lines for future books, and I've enjoyed the series enough so far that I will continue with it.
